Systematic Reading Instruction
Course Overview
The Systematic Reading Instruction course is designed to provide educators with a structured approach to reading instruction. Informed by scientific research, it aims to equip teachers with effective strategies for teaching reading.
The course is divided into 10 modules, each focusing on different aspects of reading instruction. The anticipated time required to complete the course is 8-12 hours.
As educators progress through the course, they are encouraged to reflect on their learning and identify opportunities for professional development, emphasizing the importance of continual growth in teaching practices. The course begins with an Introduction, followed by two key modules:
- The Science of Reading: This module explores research on how children learn to read and the most effective teaching methods, helping educators define and implement systematic reading instruction.
- The Science of Teaching: This module covers high-yield teaching strategies and their application in reading instruction, emphasizing practices that support diverse learners.
The remainder of the course content is organized into three phases, with each phase building on the previous one to develop a comprehensive set of skills for educators. The course also includes 100 cooperative learning activities linked to systematic reading instruction strategies, designed to be used in the classroom to enhance the learning experience.

Phase 1 - Becoming a Reader: The first phase introduces decoding skills and the recognition of high-frequency words, providing a foundation for students to begin their reading journey.
